How to Seize FSMO Roles Using ntdsutil.exe

Follow the steps below to seize FSMO roles:

  1. Prepare Your Environment:
    • Ensure you’re logged into a computer that is part of the Active Directory domain and has the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed.
  2. Access ntdsutil:
    • Click on the Start menu.
    • In the Run dialog box, type ntdsutil and then press OK.
  3. Access FSMO Role Management:
    • You’ll now be at the ntdsutil: prompt.
    • Type roles and press Enter.
  4. Enter FSMO Maintenance Mode:
    • Now, you’ll be at the fsmo maintenance: prompt.
    • Type connections and press Enter.
  5. Connect to the Target Domain Controller:
    • To connect to the specific domain controller from which you intend to seize the roles, use the command: connect to server <server>
      Replace <server> with the name of the domain controller you’re targeting.
  6. Return to FSMO Maintenance:
    • After connecting to the desired server, type q and press Enter. This will return you to the fsmo maintenance: prompt.
  7. Seize the Required FSMO Role(s):
    • To seize a specific FSMO role, execute the corresponding command from the list below:

Seize naming master
Seize infrastructure master
Seize PDC
Seize RID master
Seize schema master

Run the appropriate command for each FSMO role you need to seize. Once you’ve seized the necessary roles, type q and press Enter to return to the ntdsutil: prompt. To exit the ntdsutil utility, type q and press Enter.
